About Us
Eltham Welding Supplies Ltd is a distributor and supplier of welding equipment and related products to the UK market. We have a lot of experience within our field and would like to think that we have gained a strong reputation over the years for being knowledgeable, helpful, trustworthy and fair. We have an extensive hire fleet, and we service and repair equipment, as well as offer calibration, COSHH testing, gas inspections and more.
The head office is based in Dartford, with another branch near Hailsham, East Sussex. We deliver to London, Essex, Kent, Sussex, Surrey and Hertfordshire, and we use DHL for deliveries to the rest of the UK.
We also have a sister company, Eltham Workwear & Safety, which specialises in the supply of PPE, workwear and safety equipment.
A bit of history:
Eltham Welding Supplies Ltd was founded in 1965 by Maurice F Hickman in Eltham, South-East London. Two years later, the company moved to a disused pub at 30 Beresford Street, on the corner of McBean Street, Woolwich.
By 1969, the business had grown to 13 full-time and 6 part-time employees and had out-grown the pub, so the following year, EWS moved into a purpose-built warehouse at 2-12 Parry Place, Woolwich, where it resided for 45 years.
In 1977, Mr Hickman decided it was time to retire and arranged a business merger with James Creen & Sons (Ireland), who owned J&N Wade Electrical Distributors, a branch of which was opened within the Parry Place warehouse.
By 1980, the business had declined and was bought for the princely sum of £1 by Derek Cavalier. Mr Cavalier restored EWS to it’s former glory and created Eltham Export Ltd and Speed Marketing Ltd, which was later to form the basis of our Sussex branch.
By the early nineties, Derek was ready to retire so he brought in David (Simmo) Simpson from Esab (formerly Murex) as the managing director. In 1993, Derek Cavalier sold the company to David Simpson, who ran it until he passed away in 2018.
These days, the company is being run by David’s eldest son, Timo Simpson. Timo is carrying on the values that his father lived by: honesty, decency, reliability and respect. These are as relevant in business as they are in life.
